Case Study - Asset Tracking by GPS

Background

Working on behalf of DB Schenker Rail UK, and EuroCargoRail, ESG have led a series of projects, fitting APD Inca I and Inca II satellite tracking equipment to over 300 locomotives in the UK and Europe.

System integration design

  • Evaluation of available GPS/GSM solutions, and selection of APD
  • Electrical Integration Design for 9 locomotive fleets in UK, and 4 in Europe
    • UK Fleets: Class 37, 56, 58, 59, 60, 66, 67, 90, 92
    • EMU: Class 325
    • Euro Fleets: Vossloh G1000, G2000 & Euro 4000, Bombardier Traxx
  • Identification of appropriate transmittal methods
  • Technical drawings and procedures (electrical and mechanical)
  • Design against RGS

Further design

  • ESG currently providing technical support for operational trials of OTMR data download over INCA II connection

Approvals

  • Design scrutiny
  • Certification through Railway Approvals Ltd (Railway Approvals)

Following the success of the initial installations, and based on the wealth of systems integration experience within the ESG electrical and electronics team, DB Schenker have come back time and time again and now all mainline haulage fleets are centrally monitored, facilitating the efficiency of operations and increasing asset utilisation.
